Adding Within 10
Learning objective: Students add two one-digit numbers within 10 using ten-frames and counting objects.
1Count what you see
Start by counting each group of counters out loud. Touch one counter at a time so no counter is missed.
2Put the groups together
When two groups join, we add. 4 + 3 = 7 counters altogether.
3Use a ten-frame
A ten-frame shows how close a number is to ten. Fill the top row first, then the bottom row.
4Hop along the number line
Start at 4 and hop forward 3 spaces to land on 7.
Vocabulary
- Sum
- The number you get when you add two numbers together.
- Ten-frame
- A grid of ten boxes used to show numbers up to ten.
Worked examples
- 5 + 2 → 7
- 3 + 6 → 9
Check for understanding
- Show 8 on a ten-frame. How many more to make 10?
- Draw two groups that add to 9.
